ABOUT CARAMOAN
Name Origin
The first name given to the place was Guta de Leche by the Dutch traders who operated a gold mine in Lahuy Island and frequented the area to trade with the natives, prior to the arrival of the Spaniards. The name was first derived from the milkdrop stalagmites found among the rocks at Guta port. But upon the arrival of the Spaniards, the place came to be called Caramoan, a name derived from the word “carahan”, the kind of sea turtle which at that time was found abundantly along the shore of the peninsula. From the hard and durable shell of this crustacean, beautiful combs, accessories and decorative pieces were made. The natives would exclaim to the people wearing these trinkets “caramo-an” meaning “what beautiful things you’re wearing”.
